Joris is a dispute resolution lawyer specialising in commercial and investment treaty arbitration.

Joris has a diverse range of arbitration and disputes experience, having worked in multiple jurisdictions.

He has clerked at the French Cour de cassation, the Conseil d’État, and the European Court of Human Rights. He has also served as Court Marshall at the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal and was arbitral clerk to a prominent international arbitrator.

He has acted as counsel and tribunal secretary in multiple commercial and investor-State arbitrations conducted under the rules of HKIAC, SIAC, ICC, LCIA, ICSID, and UNCITRAL.

Prior to joining Herbert Smith Freehills, he was an associate in the dispute resolution team of a leading American law firm for several years.

  • an ICSID arbitration brought by a German Company against the People’s Republic of China
  • an ICSID arbitration brought by Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. against the Kingdom of Sweden

As Tribunal secretary:

  • two related ICC arbitrations in a private equity dispute. Over 2 billion USD in dispute
  • an ICC Gas Pricing dispute in the context of an agreement for the Sale and Purchase of LNG. Over 1 billion USD in dispute
  • a BIT dispute between a mining company and a southeast Asian State
  • a BIT dispute between an Eastern European State and an Investor
